Two days after the CBI arrested B.K. Bansal, Director-General of Corporate Affairs, his wife and daughter allegedly committed suicide at their home in East Delhi on Tuesday afternoon.

The two women hanged themselves in their bedrooms around 1.30 p.m. even as their two domestic helps cooked and cleaned the three-bedroom flat in Neelkanth Apartments, I.P. Extension.

Two separate one-page suicide notes, kept in a spiral notebook in the mother’s room, were recovered. The police refused to divulge the contents but DCP (East) Rishi Pal said the women clearly stated that no one else should be held responsible.

Mr. Bansal was arrested on Saturday for allegedly receiving Rs. 9 lakh as bribe for extending favours to a corporate firm. The money changed hands outside a Delhi hotel, the CBI had alleged, adding that subsequent searches at some places led to the seizure of an additional Rs. 54 lakh.

Security guards and residents of Neelkanth Apartment said the CBI had conducted 15-hour long raids at Mr. Bansal’s flat on two consecutive days after his arrest. As Bansal’s son, Yogesh, too had been detained by the CBI for questioning, the bureaucrat’s wife and daughter were at home during the raids.

The CBI has claimed that Mr. Bansal’s wife and daughter were neither an accused in the bribery case, nor were they summoned or questioned.

The family’s two domestic helps, Rachna and Aarti, reached the house around 12.30 p.m. They were told by Mr. Bansal’s wife and daughter to keep cooking and cleaning, and not to disturb them while they went to their bedrooms.

‘No foul play’

An hour later, the maids called out for the mother. “When she did not respond, the maids pushed open the door to find her hanging from the ceiling fan. Fearing that the daughter might have met a similar fate, they tried to open her door but it was latched from inside,” said Raghubir Singh, member of the Resident Welfare Association.

Mr. Singh called the police, who broke into the daughter’s room to find her dead, too. The two suicide notes were found soon after.

The DCP said the circumstances of the deaths did not indicate any foul play.
