50,000 marooned by floods in Upper Assam

Helicopters and boats have been pressed into service to rescue thousands of people marooned by unprecedented floods in North Lakhimpur in Upper Assam. An official said here [Shillong] to-day [June 21] that swirling floods in the Ranganadi had inundated an area of 100 square miles, affecting more than 50,000 persons in several villages in the area. More than 1,000 people were rescued and admitted in a relief camp at the North Lakhimpur College, the official added. While there has been no loss of life so far, several head of cattle were reported to have been drowned in the turbulent flood waters.
